The Science of Sawm

Fasting &
Cellular Autophagy

Discover the profound biological benefits of Islamic fasting (Sawm). In 2016, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for the discovery of "Autophagy"β€”the exact cellular mechanism activated by the fasting prescribed in Islam 1400 years ago.

What is Autophagy?

Autophagy (from Greek auto- "self" and phagein "to eat") is the body's deeply embedded mechanism for clearing out damaged cells, toxins, and cellular junk to regenerate newer, healthier cells.

Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize for discovering that this miraculous self-cleaning mechanism is triggered directly by prolonged fasting and starvation. When the body is deprived of food (as in Islamic fasting), it stops focusing on digestion and starts aggressively repairing and recycling its own cellular waste, protecting against cancer, neurological diseases, and diabetes.

The Sunnah of Fasting & Its Biological Impact

πŸŒ™

Ramadan (30 Days)

Fasting consecutively for 30 days resets the entire metabolic system.

Biological Effect

Massive reduction in visceral fat, complete reboot of the immune system by generating new white blood cells, and stabilization of insulin sensitivity.

πŸ“…

Mondays & Thursdays

The Prophet (PBUH) consistently fasted on these two days of the week.

Biological Effect

Perfectly aligns with modern "5:2 Intermittent Fasting". This rhythm prevents the body from adapting to starvation mode while keeping autophagy chronically active.

πŸŒ•

The White Days (13,14,15)

Fasting the middle three days of every lunar month when the moon is full.

Biological Effect

The full moon exerts max gravitational pull, which studies suggest affects human bodily fluids and neurotransmitters. Fasting stabilizes blood pressure and moods during this period.
