Extract of Clay
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِن سُلَالَةٍ مِّن طِينٍ
And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.

Elemental Composition
Modern chemistry confirms the human body is composed of exactly the same elements found in soil/clay (Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Calcium, and trace minerals like Iron and Zinc).
نطفة
A Drop (Nutfah)
ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاهُ نُطْفَةً فِي قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ
Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging.
Modern Science
Zygote & Implantation
The term Nutfah means a "mixed drop", precisely describing the union of the sperm and ovum. It travels down the fallopian tube and embeds itself securely ("firm lodging") into the thick uterine wall.

Clinging Clot (Alaqah)
ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً
Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot.

The Leech-like Stage
Alaqah linguistically means "leech" or "suspended thing". At days 15-24, the embryo visually looks exactly like a leech. It is suspended in the womb by the umbilical cord, and like a leech, it derives its blood supply entirely from the mother.

Chewed Lump (Mudghah)
فَخَلَقْنَا الْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً
And We made the clot into a chewed-like lump.

Somite Formation
By week 4, the embryo develops "somites" (blocks of tissue that form the spine). These somites visually resemble teeth marks, making the embryo look exactly like a piece of chewed gum or flesh.

Bones (Izam)
فَخَلَقْنَا الْمُضْغَةَ عِظَامًا
And We made [from] the lump, bones.
Modern Science
Chondrification
Following the chewed-lump stage, the mesoderm cells rapidly differentiate into cartilage models of bones. The skeletal structure begins to form before the muscles develop around it.

Flesh/Muscle (Lahm)
فَكَسَوْنَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا
And We covered the bones with flesh.

Myogenesis
Right after the cartilage models of the bones form, muscle cells (myoblasts) migrate and aggregate around the bones, literally "clothing" or covering the newly formed skeletal framework.
خلقا آخر
Another Creation
ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ
Then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
Modern Science
The Fetal Stage
By week 9, the embryo morphs from an unrecognizable lump of tissue into a distinct human fetus (fetal stage). It develops distinct facial features, limbs, and functioning organs, becoming "another creation".
Historical Context
The precise sequence of these embryological stages (Extract -> Zygote -> Leech-like -> Chewed lump -> Bones -> Muscles -> Fetus) was completely unknown to 7th-century humanity. It wasn't until the invention of the compound microscope in the 17th century and advanced ultrasounds in the 20th century that modern science caught up with the Quranic description.
